3 Things to Consider When Choosing Exterior Paint Colors

Exterior paint colors on your house can make a world of difference when it comes to your home’s curb appeal. From the first driveby to photos online, the paint and colors of your home really can make a lasting impression. Whether you want to sell your home or simply need an update, a fresh coat of paint is an easy way to breathe new life into your house.

But how do you choose the right exterior paint colors for your home? Well, for every home, that answer is different. With thousands of exterior paint colors available, choosing the right one for your home can be a daunting task. But if you’re new to home painting and are looking to get an idea for what even to consider, we’re sharing three main areas that should come into play.

The Dominant Field Color

Also known as the main paint color. This is the color you may use on your siding, painted brick, shiplap, and other larger areas. The dominant color really speaks to the overall palette and should work nicely with other factors around your home, such as stone, landscaping, or other structures.

The Contrasting Accent Color

Once you’ve found the perfect dominant field color, an accent color should be chosen for accent pieces, including shutters, doors, and other smaller areas of the home. The accent color can often get overlooked, but it should provide a nice contrast to your main color without taking away from it.

The Neutral Trim Color

The last color to decide on when preparing to repaint your home is a trim color. This third color should complement the first two and is generally a fairly neutral tone. The trim color is used for all trim work, including window and door casings, roof edging, railings, and other areas, making your home look cohesive and complete.

Putting it all together

Ideally, your exterior paint color scheme should have three major parts:

  1. A field color that dominates
  2. An accent color that brings shutters, doors, and other smaller parts to life and
  3. A trim color that brings it all together

We recommend choosing your field color and trim colors together first. Once you have chosen your combination of field and trim that look and feel right, make your home stand out with an eye-catching accent color. Feel free to go bold and do something that contracts the others, but try to keep that color palette in mind.
